Is Perfectionism Preventing Your Success

Is perfectionism preventing your success? There are several ways perfectionism can be defined.

One definition is:

“refusal to accept any standard short of perfection”

Another more extended definition is:

“Perfectionism is often defined as the need to be or appear to be perfect…….. It is typically viewed as a positive trait rather than a flaw”.

Then, of course, there are the more colloquial ones like:

“I used to be conceited but now I’m just perfect”.

In the same vein, there are many sayings that push this concept of perfectionism or being perfect as the positive trait mentioned above.

Consider “If a job is worth doing it’s worth doing well” or “If you want a job done properly you have to do it yourself”.

And while we may smile, and perhaps think something a little different, perfection is often regarded as the one thing for which we should always aim.


There Is Some Truth In This But


All of these contain elements of truth. And I am not for one moment suggesting that being sloppy or negligent is the right way to go.

However, there is a point where trying to be perfect can effectively stop one from making any real progress towards the desired goal.

It can spawn a continual fiddling and fuss about minutiae and trivial things that at the end of the day will make no real difference to the result or outcome.

This is especially true in the make money online business where there are a number of distinct activities to be undertaken to achieve this goal.

If we are not careful these activities can turn into consuming distractions that take us down rabbit holes that lead to nowhere in the striving for the “perfect result.” The end goal then gets lost.


What Causes Striving For Perfection?


1 Choosing a Niche


This is where most of us should begin. Often times it isn’t. A bright idea about starting an online business needs more than it seems like a good thing to do.

Keyword selection has almost become a black art with numerous tools being recommended in the search for the perfect niche. Some gurus have turned choosing a niche into an overblown task.

2 Research

Grasping concepts is important. Once they are understood much falls into place. But there is a real risk of becoming too distracted by this as well.

In my early days working with WordPress, I can remember getting hung up on the difference between a Post and a Page. That concern seems almost irrelevant now but at the time it consumed a lot of energy.
